The Barber

Two dutch hairdressers had had enough of the „metrosexual male” of today. Longing back to the days when men were men, they decided to start an old-fashioned barbershop in the city of Rotterdam. The shop looks like a turn of the century place where men would come to get a haircut and a shave. But „Schorem” (www.schorembarbier.nl) is more than that: it’s a spot where men gather, enjoy a cup of coffee, listen to some music and talk about manly things.

I saw these people and their crew in a dutch tv-show called „de wereld draait door” and was immediately struck by their originality. Their team of barbers are all heavily tattooed like a bunch of ex-cons (and if i’m not mistaken some of theme are), but groomed to the toe. Furthermore they are all extremely skilled „haircutters” (not hairdressers) and „shavers” with a passion for the forgotten craft of barbering.

Now this way of presenting themselves could easily be mistaken for a gimmick, a trick. Nothing could be further from the truth: this crowd is the real Mc Coy! With their current popularity „Schorem” could easily be a successful franchising chain, but that’s not their ambition. They want to be authentic and real and passionate. Don’t try to make an appointment because they don’t do appointments. Just go over there and wait. The waiting is the social part of the whole barber-experience. Feel free to bring your dog but leave the mrs. at home because she won’t get in. They have a selection of 12 haircuts. If you don’t see anything that suits you, then you’re not in the right place.

I’ve got a soft spot for passionate originals like this, so i did a quick sketch of „Bertus” using real old-fashioned pencil on real old-fashioned paper this time.

Africa

So my friend Luc recently moved to Guinée. I’ve never been to Africa, but i imagine this great continent must have some wonderful landscapes, amazing sunsets to be admired in full cinemascope...

Here’s a quick digital sketch i made...

In compliance with everyone's advice

„Why don’t you put up a website with those drawings you make,” my friends asked. „You should put up some of those photo’s you make.” So i finally decited to set up a new website for my „artistic” escapades. Every once in a while i’ll go back to my „roots” so to speak, pick up a pencil and just draw away. Some of the stuff on this page will have a commercial purpose and some of it will be doodles. Same with the photography: some will serve a purpose, some won’t. Anyhow, just keep an eye on this space as we progress through time and space … together….

To set the tone here’s a little Chet Baker sketch i made a while ago on my wacom intuos 4 tablet. Hope you like!
